Mirth.
By
John Riminton.

Cynical Laughter, hollow laughter
Laughter that denies belief.
Raucous laughter, bawdy laughter
Laughter that suggests relief.

All this laughter has one thing in common
despite the emotion that gave it birth.
Whatever the tone, one thing is certain
none of that laughter is born from mirth.

Mirth is a feeling deep on the inside
Merriment comes as a rare event.
Seldom with adults but often in childhood
What is the reason that gleeful mood went?

As one gets older, things crowd around one
Bad news floods in from all over the earth.
But in one's childhood, all things are local
Could being small be the secret of mirth?
